I remember how a lot of people frowned upon online dating in my teenage years. In those days, you would’ve been called a desperado for using dating apps. But what do you really know about dating as a teenager? I guess you’re just too young to understand…
Even in this day and age, there are still a lot of people who frown upon online dating. If you’re on Tinder, people automatically assume you’re desperately looking to have a one night stand. If you’re on MatchMaker, you’re considered to be a hopeless romantic. So what do you call the people who have found love on social media? Isn’t sliding into the DMs a form of online dating?
It Goes Down In The DM!
I’m sure someone has slid into your DMs before or maybe you’re guilty of doing all the sliding. Either way, I know for a fact that you’ve thought about responding back if the admirer was easy on the eye. For the people who don’t know what sliding into the DMs means, it’s basically when someone sends you an admiring direct message on a social media app with the hope to meet up to either have sex or to actually get to know you on a personal level and see where the wind takes you. Doesn’t that sound like the same reasons people use the already existing online dating sites?
You’re Up For SALE Without Even Knowing It!
Just take a minute to think about it… Dating apps allow you to sell yourself with a few words and just like the available space in your Instagram and Twitter bio. On dating apps, you have more space to sell yourself but on Instagram, you’ve only got 150 characters to describe yourself in the bio so you better go hard or go home! You might not be in search of a new bae but there’s someone out there that is reading your bio right now and thinking of sliding into your DMs for one reason or the other. Words like Public Figure, Artist or just a brief description of yourself can give someone enough information to want to slide into your DMs.
And let’s not forget about the pictures! You have the luxury of going through a lot of pictures on Instagram just like on dating apps! From glow up pictures to throwback pictures if you’re lucky. When I say glow up pictures, I’m not talking about pictures that make you look like a goody two shoes. I’m talking about pictures that will make someone say ‘It’s lit!’
You may not want that type of attention but let’s be real… We all want to look our best in pictures so don’t be surprised if someone gravitates to that picture of you in your bikini on the beach in Cancun…
Sliding In The DMs And Dating Apps Are The Same Thing!
Some of you are using social media as a dating app without even realising it. You might not necessarily agree with what I’m saying and that’s totally fine. But let me just ask you one question… Does Instagram or Twitter work without being connected to WiFi or mobile data? I rest my case *drops mic*.
Stop Looking Down On Dating Apps!
I’ve got a confession to make… I used to frown upon online dating when I was younger… big time! I didn’t think it was possible for people to have a genuine connection with someone they’ve met online. With age, I realised that we criticise things we don’t understand or sometimes haven’t experienced. Of course, you can have chemistry with someone you’ve met online! You might realise this after spending some time getting to know them on a personal level. Love is a very beautiful thing and has no rules! So who am I to tell you that you can’t find love online? Using dating apps may not be your cup of tea and that’s absolutely fine but there’s no need to put people down who make use of them. So if you’ve found yourself looking down on people who use dating apps especially if you’ve slid into someone’s DMs before, you might wanna stop doing that.
Sugars and love,
